Acute Care Q & A

What is acute care?

Acute care — also commonly called urgent care — is offered when you can’t wait to schedule an appointment due to a sudden, serious medical concern such as an asthma attack, adverse reaction to medication, an infection, or dehydration.

Often people think should go to the hospital emergency room for any type of unscheduled treatment, but going to Pickett Family Medical Center is a more efficient, cost-effective, and comfortable option.

Rather than wait in an emergency room, you’re seen right away by staff that already know you and your medical history.

Acute care is not an option if you’ve been involved in a serious accident, can not walk, suspect you have a broken bone, require stitches, or if you’re unconscious or having a seizure. These should be treated in a hospital emergency room.

In addition, if you suspect a heart attack or stroke — due to chest pain, slurred speech, confusion or sudden paralysis — the hospital is better prepared to treat you.

Medical complications for newborn babies should also be treated at the hospital.

What conditions are commonly treated in acute care?

  • Pain that is of concern but can be tolerated
  • Flu
  • Sinus infection
  • Bronchitis or pneumonia
  • Asthma attack
  • Bladder infection
  • Suspected fractures
  • Cuts, scrapes, or small burns
  • Dehydration
  • Eye infections
  • Earaches
  • Rashes or infections
  • Fever

If you have any of these symptoms or suspected conditions, you can come directly to Pickett Family Medical Center without an appointment. The staff makes sure you’re attended to as quickly as possible.

What kinds of treatment are available in acute care?

After evaluating your condition, your doctor at Pickett family Medical Center recommends the most effective treatment plan.

In some cases, treatment can begin right in the office, including:

  • On-site radiographic imaging to determine fractures and other conditions
  • IV for dehydration
  • IV antibiotic therapy
  • Steroids for severe inflammation
  • B12 injections
  • Nebulizer treatments for asthma
  • Prescriptions for antibiotics and other necessary medications

If you have any of these conditions, visit Pickett Family Medical Center for acute care services. It’s best to call before coming, but if necessary, just come right in during business hours.
