Laser Hair Removal Q & A

What is laser hair removal?

Laser hair removal is one of the most popular cosmetic procedures performed in the U.S. During laser hair removal, a laser directs a highly concentrated light beam into the hair follicle. When the follicle absorbs the light, the hair is destroyed.

What are the benefits of laser hair removal?

Laser hair removal is permanent. The procedure is able to target a very specific area, leaving the surrounding area untouched. The laser is precise and can be adjusted depending on the size of the area and the thickness of the hair. The procedure also eliminates painful ingrown hairs.

Laser hair removal is also very fast. Each pulse from the laser only lasts a fraction of a second, so your upper lip can be done in about one minute. A larger area like a leg can take about an hour.

Most people see permanent hair loss after anywhere between 3-6 sessions.

What should I expect during laser hair removal?

Once you and your doctor agree that laser hair removal is the right choice, you should avoid waxing, tweezing, or electrolysis for six weeks.

When you arrive for the treatment, your Pickett Family doctor trims the hair in the target area to only a few millimeters.  A cooling gel is then applied to the area to help the laser penetrate the skin.

Once the procedure begins, you feel a small pulse as the laser sends light into your skin. This may feel like a tiny pin prick. Some people report more sensitivity in certain areas like the bikini region or underarms.

For a day or two after laser hair removal, the target area may feel like it’s sunburned. You can use cool compresses or moisturizing cream to ease any discomfort. Within a few weeks, the hair begins to fall out.

You should wear sunscreen on the treated area to protect the skin, which may be more sensitive after treatment. You can schedule your next treatment approximately six weeks later.
